Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry defeated Andy Murray by 6-4,6-2,6-2 in the first round of the 2024 AO. Murray was making a comeback at the Grand Slam, having undergone hip surgery. Although he managed to give a fight in the first set, but in the next two, it was almost a one-sided battle. The 36-year-old British superstar looked in tears as he lifted his racket bags at the end of the match. He applauded the crowd for their incredible support at the Show Court Arena.
This was Murray’s only second, first-round defeat at the Grand Slam in almost 16 years. He looked devastated after this terrible loss and hinted at something which his fans would have never wanted to hear. But his compatriot, Cameron Norrie is still optimistic with the former no.1’s run at next year’s AO. He said, ‘Yeah, I mean, yeah, he’s obviously had an unbelievable career and he keeps grinding. He loves travelling, he loves the sport. I mean, I think he’s still playing well, really, really well, and he’s still so dedicated. I think he’ll be ready to go in the next one, for sure.‘

Andy Murray has now faced Tomas Martin Etcheverry thrice in his career. The Argentinian leads the H2H with a 2-1 margin after his latest victory.
